Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd popularly known as AIC , is a public sector undertaking. It was established in Year 2003 by Government of India with an aim to serve farmers and other people involved in agriculture business. Agriculture Insurance Company Of India Ltd (AIC) is promoted by General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC), NABARD and the 4 Public Sector General Insurance companies — United India Insurance Company Limited, National Insurance Company Limited, Oriental Insurance Company Limited and The New India Assurance Company Limited.
Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd is under the administrative control of Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and under the operational supervision of Ministry of Agriculture. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, Hyderabad, is the regulatory body governing AIC. Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited has its headquartered out of New Delhi, India with 17 Regional Offices spread across India.
Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd has taken over the implementation of National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) and provides insurance cover to millions of framers in the country. AIC currently offers area based and weather based crop insurance programs in almost 500 districts of India. It covers almost 20 million farmers, making it one of the biggest crop insurers in the world. In future AIC aims to operate other insurance businesses directly or indirectly concerning agriculture and its allied activities. AIC sells various agriculture and allied insurance products and schemes. A significant amount of business is derived out of National Agriculture Insurance Scheme.
